Protect your vision if you have diabetes.
Diabetes affects millions of Americans and can lead to serious health problems—including vision loss from a condition called diabetic retinopathy. High blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina, possibly causing scarring and permanent vision impairment if left untreated.
Are you at Risk?
Anyone with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes can develop diabetic retinopathy, especially if they:
✔️ Have poorly controlled blood sugar
✔️ Have had diabetes for many years
✔️ Also have high blood pressure or cholesterol
✔️ Are pregnant
What Happens During a Diabetic Eye Exam?
Diabetic eye screening is simple and painless. Special eye drops will be used to gently dilate your pupils, which may cause brief stinging and temporarily blur your vision. Once your eyes are dilated, you’ll rest your head on a machine while a camera captures detailed images of your retina to check for any signs of damage. You may notice a quick flash with each photo, but there’s no discomfort.
A standard vision test will also be performed, where you’ll read letters from a distance chart and a close-up card to assess your clarity of sight
If signs of diabetic retinopathy are found, we’ll discuss treatment options to help protect your vision.
