Cataracts
Protect your vision and lower your risk for this common age-related condition.
Cataracts are one of the most common vision issues, especially as we age. By age 80, more than half of Americans will develop cataracts or have cataract surgery. If you’re noticing cloudy, blurred, or dim vision, it could be a sign of cataracts.
What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, usually due to age-related protein changes. This can lead to blurry vision, glare sensitivity, yellowed colors, or trouble seeing at night. They typically develop in both eyes, though not always at the same rate.
Common Risk Factors:
- Aging
- Sun exposure without UV protection
- Diabetes or high blood pressure
- Smoking or excessive alcohol use
- Long-term steroid use
- Family history of cataracts
Prevention & Management:
While cataracts can’t always be avoided, you can reduce your risk and slow their progression:
- Schedule regular comprehensive eye exams
- Wear UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors
- Eat a nutrient-rich diet
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol use
